Day 4 — There Is No Gift of Taking

Scripture: Romans 12:6

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” God gives gifts for a purpose. And that purpose isn’t simply to make us feel useful. Our gifts are meant to serve others. Paul lists several gifts: prophecy, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy.

Notice something important: Paul doesn’t tell everyone to do everything. He says, essentially, Use what God has given you. There is a temptation in the church to become consumers rather than contributors.

We ask: “What can the church do for me?” But Scripture pushes us toward a different question: “What can God do through me for others?” Think about a church potluck. If only two people bring food, there may be something to eat—but the table is missing much of what it could have been.

The same thing happens when God’s people don’t use their gifts. The church can function, but something is missing.

There is no gift of taking. God has given each of us something to bring to the table.

Reflection:

Are you primarily consuming from your church community, or are you actively contributing to it?

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I have focused more on what I can receive than what I can give. Show me how to use my gifts to serve others. Give me a servant’s heart and a willingness to step forward when You call. Amen.
